Control of a Mechanical Resonant System

Overview

This project was to design a drive circuit to control a mechanical resonant device. A mirror was fixed to the oscillating member to be used to sweep a light beam.

The resonance device was a spring and mass system, with a magnet attached to the mass. An electromagnet was driven by a circuit to push and pull the magnet. An optical sensor provided position information to the circuit for applying the injected force at the proper timing to optimize the oscillation amplitude.

The device shown below was built to develop and test the control of a mechanical resonant system. This work resulted in a US patent:
