ISGC: Integrated Starter & Generator Controller

Overview

An Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG) is a single electric device that combines the functions of a traditional starter motor and an alternator into one unit.

An ISG operates bi-directionally using the fundamental principle that electric motors can create torque when supplied with electricity, and conversely, generate electricity when spun by mechanical force.

Operating Modes

Cranking (Starter Mode)

Draws power from an onboard battery to spin the engine's crankshaft or flywheel, replacing the noisy engagement of a traditional starter motor.

Generating (Alternator Mode)

Once the engine is running, the spinning crankshaft turns the ISG, converting mechanical energy back into electrical energy to charge the vehicle's battery and run electrical accessories.

Unique Design Features

Our ISGC was designed to work with a scooter engine with SYM's proprietary compression pressure reduction mechanisms. It activates these mechanisms after the engine stops to prepare for the next engine cranking.

Engineering Challenge: Crankshaft 'Land In Place' Algorithm

Our unique ISGC design incorporates a crankshaft 'land in place' algorithm that guides the engine crankshaft spin down after key-off to arrive and stop at an optimum target position for cranking. This minimizes crankshaft repositioning after the fact to save time and battery life.
